Smite and Ignite (Pentakill album)

Hey just wondering who the hell was in charge of deciding what kind of guitar tone was to be used on Smite and Ignite? It's a great album (well, the four...maybe five real songs that are on it) but it sounds like it was recorded through an 80's JCM or something with the gain turned right down and the pickups rolled back too. Now I understand that it's supposed to be a homage to the old/original power metal bands, but the minimal gain crunch tone combined with low 7 string riffs is really just a huge waste of delicious potential.
